Whether you’re a Politics major or just curious about current affairs, the University of Nottingham Politics Society (PolSoc) offers an exciting range of opportunities for all students. From insightful discussions to vibrant social events, being a member of this society is a great way to immerse yourself in political discourse and expand your university experience.

What’s in Store for You?

As a member of PolSoc, you’ll have access to an array of events and activities that make politics both engaging and enjoyable.

The society also prides itself on fostering a sense of community between students and faculty. We’ll be hosting a variety of social events, including nights out, where you can connect with fellow students in a relaxed environment. Throughout the year, we’ll also be featuring guest speakers from diverse political backgrounds—an excellent opportunity to hear from experts and engage in lively discussions on pressing issues.

Sports and Socials

PolSoc isn’t just about debates and guest lectures; we also love sports!

If you’re interested in playing football, who won the IMS Shield at the end of the 2024 Academic Year, or netball, who was also incredibly successful across both teams, we’ve got IMS (Intra-Mural Sports) teams you can join. Whether you’re an experienced player or a complete beginner, everyone is welcome.

Our social calendar will keep you busy, with everything from themed parties to informal meetups. For those interested in more structured social events, PolSoc also organizes collaborations with other societies, so you can meet students from all disciplines. These social events are a fantastic way to make new friends and network with like-minded individuals across the university.

Professional and Personal Development

PolSoc is committed to more than just social and political engagement. We aim to support the academic and professional growth of our members. Through partnerships with the Politics Department, we’ll be organizing events that encourage collaboration between students and staff.

This includes career-focused opportunities, where our Professional Development Officer will share valuable work experience openings and networking events relevant to politics and international relations.

We’ll also be creating a monthly newsletter and blog, giving members the chance to contribute their thoughts on political issues. This is a great platform to develop your writing skills and gain visibility within the university community. For those interested in charity and social justice, we’ll be working on community projects and initiatives like the “It’s a Penalty” campaign to raise awareness about modern slavery.

Inclusivity and Welfare

PolSoc is proud to be a welcoming and inclusive society. We encourage participation from students across all disciplines, not just those studying Politics and International Relations. Our Welfare, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer ensures that all members feel supported, especially during our events, and that our activities reflect the diverse views and backgrounds of our membership.

Why Join?

Joining PolSoc is more than just signing up for a society—it’s an opportunity to broaden your horizons, build lasting friendships, and engage deeply with political issues that shape our world. Whether you’re passionate about politics or simply looking for a dynamic social group, PolSoc offers something for everyone.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Politics Society and seeing you at our upcoming events!
